1910s Unknown shop in Blantyre.

In early June 2015, Blantyre man Jim Cochrane sent over this photo, saying it was in his family photo collection and is allegedly of a shop in Blantyre. The date and location are unknown. Despite the gentle slope on the pavement, I have shown this to several people and we don’t believe it to be Auchentibber, the style of the shop facade more in keeping with the shops in Stonefield. The tall doorways indicative that this was a tall building of more than one storey. There is a glimpse of another shop or house at the side indicating this small shop may be one of several terraced shops.

The window dressing, adverts and fashion suggests the picture may be 1910s or even 1920s. What we have is a grocers and general supply shop, selling loafs of bread, sweets, chocolate, teas and boot polish. The lady is perhaps the owner for such a photograph being taken would normally include the proprietor, not just the staff. If you know more, please get in touch.
